03.31.12Caregivers’ mental health may improve with short daily meditation
A yoga meditation program could reduce depression symptoms and boost mental health, a study finds, and thats not allit may also show benefits at the cellular level.
The study, published recently in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, involved 49 caregivers ranging in age from 45 to 91 who were taking care of family members with dementia. Caregivers are at risk for high stress levels, often with no outlet or relief, which can lead to health problems.
The participants were randomly assigned to two programs: Kundalini yoga Kirtan Kriya meditation or passive relaxation with instrumental music. The yoga meditation program included breathing, chanting and repetitive finger movements, call mudras. Both were done for 12 minutes a day for eight weeks.
At the end of those eight weeks the meditation group seemed to come out ahead. Among those men and women, 65% showed 50% improvement on a depression rating scale, and 52% showed a 50% improvement on a mental health scale. Among those who did passive relaxation, those numbers were 31.2% for depression and 19% for mental health.
More evidence was found on the cellular level. The meditation group had a 43.3% improvement in telomerase activity, while the relaxation group saw only a 3.7% boost. Telomeres, the study explains, are repetitions of DNA sequencesat the end of a chromosome that protect it from damage that can lead to health problems. Higher telomerase activity can help improve the durability of immune cells.
We know that chronic stress places caregivers at a higher risk for developing depression, said lead author Dr. Helen Lavretsky in a news release. Lavretsky, professor of psychiatry at the UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, added, On average, the incidence and prevalence of clinical depression in family dementia caregivers approaches 50%. Caregivers are also twice as likely to report high levels of emotional distress.
03.30.12Relaxation of investment rule questioned
The pan-green camp yesterday criticized an imminent decision by President Ma Ying-jeou’s (???) administration to further relax restrictions on Chinese investment, saying it could jeopardize the local economy.
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) said that while they did not oppose attracting foreign and Chinese investment, they were concerned at the potential ramifications of opening “sensitive” manufacturing sectors to China.
Ma has scrapped numerous restrictions on Chinese investment with more than 100 executive orders over the past three-plus years and he is now reportedly set to open up public construction and more segments of the manufacturing industry to -Chinese investors, DPP Legislator Pan -Men-an (???) said.
The government is reportedly on the brink of implementing a “third wave of relaxation” by opening up more types of public construction, including airports, highways and mass rapid transit systems, to Chinese investment, if the Executive Yuan approves a Ministry of Economic Affairs proposal today.
Pan said Taiwan has already opened 42 -percent of its manufacturing sector, 42 percent of its service sector and 24 percent of its public construction sector to China during earlier investment rule revisions.
He also questioned China’s eligibility to place bids for public construction and government projects in Taiwan because Beijing is not a signatory to the Government Procurement Agreement.
The DPP caucus demanded that the government hold transparent discussions and public hearings, to thoroughly evaluate the impact on national security, labor and the economy before making a final -decision, Pan said.
TSU Legislator Hsu Chung-hsin (???) expressed concern about a reported plan to eliminate share-holding limits on Chinese investment and further relax rules governing Chinese capital in a question-and-answer session with Council of Economic and Development Minister Yiing Chii-ming (???).
Yiing said he had not received such a proposal, but all Chinese investment would be screened by the ministry’s Investment Commission.
The commission would make its assessment based on a wide range of considerations, including the impact on national security, industrial development and the protection of sensitive technology, Yiing said.
In a press release, TSU Chairman Huang Kun-huei (???) said his party had not ruled out boycotting budgetary reviews for the council and the ministry if the two agencies failed to produce a comprehensive five-year evaluation on the potential impact of Chinese investment on local industries.
03.29.12Budget Reactions: FM gave realty sector a miss, says Astrum Homes
By Om Chaudhry, Founder amp; CEO FIRE Capital and Chairman, Astrum Homes
Another lost opportunity by our Finance Minister, who could have done significant lot to drive the consumer demand for real estate and turn the fortunes of the sector and in turn give a fillip to GDP growth in 2012-13.
While he mentioned that the objective of the budget was to create conditions for growth and to focus on domestic demand driven growth recovery, however he gave the real estate sector , which could have helped him meet these objectives, a miss.
The real estate sector holds significant prominence as its contribution to the Indian GDP is bound to grow beyond 6%. Housing sector has linkages to more than 250 ancillary industries and employs more than 10% of our workforce. Having said that, industry, which is undergoing stress, was in immediate need of several concessions and support measures on easing of liquidity, relaxation of high tax structures and policy stimuli to facilitate a more congenial regulatory and development environment. High costs of inflation and financing has choked demand and supply situation that is leading to a significant demand glut and impacting the social living conditions especially in fast growing geographies.
Nonetheless, a positive step forwards has been to allow foreign debt funding in affordable housing. Thankfully, which has been acknowledged by the government as housing is as much a critical need as food and education, two areas where government is quite proactive otherwise.
By not rolling back the 1% interest subsidy government has again upheld the need for state intervention in the affordable segment. Well it does miss the point of how inflation has taken that slab from 10 lakhs to somewhere close to at least 50% higher than that. This also happens to be a segment which gets easily impacted by interest rate fluctuations. So a wider scope and a stronger support mechanism could have been much appreciated.
Hike in indirect taxes will definitely impact the cost of delivery of real estate impacting overall demand. Further, shifts in tax slabs are too small to influence incremental demand.
No other positive measure to lend higher vibrancy into this sector was introduced or mentioned by Mr. Pranab Mukherjee. Any step towards attracting more FDI into the sector through relaxation of investment and exit norms providing a conducive environment for exits could have gone a long way in getting international interest back into Indian realty.

Finding Relaxation At Planet Beach Spa
Im not normally the kind of dude that goes to a day spa.
#13;
I dont have anything against them, because, well, I never knew enough to be against anything.
#13;
But on a recent Saturday morning I stopped in at Planet Beach Contempo Spa, 8201 S. Howell Ave., and chatted with new owners Wyatt Foderaro and Phillip Bondi.
#13;
At the end of our conversation, I decided to try some of the services for myself. I was at the tail end of a particularly stressful week. Why not?
#13;
Thus began my maiden voyage into the land of the spa.
#13;
It started with answering a few questions about myself so that Planet Beach can build a profile of me, as they do any client. Not surprisingly, relaxation was what I would be focusing on, and the services they recommended for me matched that profile.
#13;
First up was the hydration station.
#13;
Oh, sweet lord. This is as good as it gets.
#13;
I lay down on this machine that essentially gave me a full-body massage while everything except my head was in a 120-degree sauna.
#13;
The following went through my head as I entered this state of extreme relaxation:
#13;
- This would be the ideal way to listen to Bon Iver music.
#13;
- I wonder how much it would cost to buy one for my house.
#13;
- I really have an irrational fear that someone is about to walk in.
#13;
Well, no one did disturb me, and the greatest part was that it wasnt one of those things that flew by. Somehow, they nailed it – it didnt go too long and it didnt go too short, and it accomplished everything it was suppose to accomplish.
#13;
After one of the more glorious 20 minutes of my month, I headed over to get some red light therapy. This involves some funny looking glasses and laying down on a machine again minus the vibrations.
#13;
I would compare this to a tanning bed, only without the tanning part. I guess its supposed to help the way your skin looks. Whatever. It was a good cool-down after the excitement of the hydration station.
#13;
I then received whats termed a luniere facial, in which the funny-looking glasses shielded me from some extremely bright light. The light was crazy bright, but you get used to it after a few minutes and it becomes so relaxing that it would be easy to fall asleep.
#13;
In the last service, I dipped my hands into some warm water and got a umo hand massage.
#13;
Mind you, luniere facial, massages, hydration station – I could not have told you what any of these terms meant before I went. They might has well have been in Yiddish.
#13;
But let me tell you something, day spas are awesome. I realize to some people, this is like saying, Hey, have you noticed how pretty it is to look out onto Lake Michigan?
#13;
But its still worth throwing out there: even dudes who werent previously into day spas can become big fans. Especially after you reach maximum levels of relaxation.

Personal Relaxation Can Reduce Stress Levels
In modern society, stress has become as unavoidable as death and taxes.
While the term tends to carry negative connotations in today’s world, stress can be normal and even useful. It prompts your brain to take precautionary measures designed to help your body respond to challenging or threatening situations, usually described as a “fight or flight” reaction.
However, it is when stress remains at high levels for extended periods of time that the situation can become more problematic. Increased stress levels can strain your body and harm your health, leading to serious physical and emotional issues, including depression, insomnia, ulcers and heart disease.
Here are five simple measures to help avoid these complications and increase your overall quality of life:
1. Exercise
Whether it’s walking or weightlifting, virtually any form of exercise can act as a stress reliever. Exercising regularly can help improve sleep and relax your muscles. It also causes your body to generate extra endorphins – neurotransmitters which work to relax you and improve your overall mood. A brisk walk or swim can be a great way to gather your thoughts and temporarily remove yourself from the usual stresses of everyday life.
2. Eat healthier
By eating a balanced diet, you can ensure that your body is well-equipped to tackle life’s daily challenges. Make sure to begin each day with a sensible breakfast and eat small, balanced meals regularly. You could also try reducing your caffeine intake, as it tends to disrupt sleep and cause irritability, which can exacerbate stress responses.
3. Time management
Using your time efficiently will help relieve stress. If your workload is particularly heavy, set a daily schedule to remove some of the uncertainty from the coming day. Similarly, identifying specific stressors will allow you to anticipate and prepare for them. If possible, try leaving a few minutes earlier for your morning commute to avoid starting the day in a rush.
4. Personal time
For many people, the demands of a job extend well beyond the hours of 9 to 5. That’s why it’s important to designate a short period of time each day for personal relaxation. Turn off your phone, power down your computer and spend some time doing something you enjoy. Put your stress on hold and take respite while reading, exercising, meditating, getting a massage or taking a bath. If your daily stresses become overwhelming, you may even consider taking a short vacation.
5. Holistic remedies
Certain herbal remedies have been known to relieve tension and reduce stress and anxiety. Substituting green tea for your regular cup of coffee is a healthy way to improve sleep by reducing your caffeine intake. Chamomile and black tea are renowned for their calming properties, while ginseng and licorice root help normalize the body during times of stress.
